Marilyn Manson's
purpose was never to provoke for the sake of provocation itself. Following the (in)famous example of other controversial artists
such as Marquis De Sade for example, he uses a sting, dipped in a unique mixture of provocation, violence and artistic rebellion.
Blood Sugar Sex Tragic. Explicit lyrics, mind-struckingvideos and on-the-brink-of-scandal concert performances. Just another
rock star? Surely not. Because Marilyn Manson not only has something to sing for us. He certainly has something to say. And
he doesn't give a fuck whether we want to hear him, because he wants to be heard. For his and our sake and for the sake of
art. And death.
Art...Death...Death...Art...the clash between them
is more than apparent. It's in the antichrist superstar's own name. What happens when (the name of)starlet MARILYN monroe,
Hollywood's aiming at fame pop-art queen meets the anti-social, dark persona of the serial killer charles MANSON? This "marriage
of the pain" makes from the unknown American journalist Brian Warner one of the most important and influential artists of
all time- MARILYN MANSON.
And when I say artist I mean it in all possible ways. His multilateral interests and intelligently written lyrics transcend
MMs music into a celebration of art. Dark, blood-tasted but beautiful. Wholesome, yet opened for interpretation. His works
surely bear the mark of a real genius. Drawings, songs, essays are born equally remarkable. Thus, influencing all of our senses
with his creations he can easily invite us to fight the world and our own selves until we cease to be "drained of our colours".
Because this grayish existence can cause more pain than any death:
I'm
not attached to your world
Nothing heals and nothing grows
***
I
can tell you what they say in space
That our earth is too grey
But when the spirit is so digital
The body acts this
way
That world was killing me
That world was killing me
Disassociative
Later this melancholy and
almost numb observance are amputated by angered and violent revolt .In "the fight song" Manson sings
"but i'm not a slave to a god that doesn't exist
but
i'm not a slave to world that doesn't give a shit
and when we were good you just closed you eyes
so when we are bad
we're going to scar your minds
fight, fight,
fight, fight "
Yes, fight! But use your mind and not your fist!
